Watchmakers face many challenges when regulating a watch. One is regulating the effect that gravity plays in the movement. A tourbillon acts as a way to counter the drag effect that gravity plays. Especially on smaller components in a watch's escapement when held in certain positions.
A tourbillon places critical parts of the watch’s mechanics into a rotating cage; the balance wheel and escapement to be specific. The tourbillon will rotate this cage at the rate of 1 round per minute. In our watch pictured above the cage acts as the "seconds" hand. This rotating cage counteracts the adverse effects gravity creates.
Is a tourbillon watch more accurate? Not necessarily. If you want "atomic clock" accuracy down to a fraction of a second, read your phone. A tourbillon is a complicated movement that's the king of watch movements. Something that shows the guy next to you, you’re the boss. Even today, there are almost a dozen luxury watchmakers producing watches everyday. One of the town's most respected watchmakers was Alfred Helwig who was once a student (then a 40-year Head teacher) at the German Watchmaking School Glashutte.
