A Hobbs Meter is an instrument on an aircraft that measures how many hours the engine has run. It measures "flight hours" and unlike a tachometer- regardless of RPM. This is crucial for maintenance schedules.
You don't want to be at 30,000+ feet with an engine that is past-due for service. It could mean life or death. On land...while it's not life or death to keep accurate time of your daily life... it's nice to treat time as if it were. We even printed the gauge’s “hourglass” symbol on the dial.
